a early pre-release uniTuio demo. 1 Year, 7 Months ago
so this is a little demo i came up with for one of my professors to show off his table with. it is using an early smallecule pre release of uniTuio sander threw my way. its nothing amazing like the glass blowing demo. my professor wanted to be able to play poker on the table but also be able to hold his cards on his iphone. so i thought hmm how would be able to flick cards from the table to an iphone ? my initial answer was quartz composer and bbosc. so after a couple days mucking about in QC with some of sanders old QC lightbox files as example, i was able to accomplish the task. then on sunday afternoon i decided to try ago with unity and was amazed how fast and clean this was able to be done using uniTuio as a base.
the professor didn't really didn't know what to think as he had some students working on the same concept for year. i don't know if he was impressed i could do something over night that a group had been working on for a couple semester's ? all he said was why are the cards see thru. i guess he was expecting a more 2d green felt poker table kind of look the others had been drafting.
the other students ended up getting mad at my professor because he had me make an implementation. i guess the whole things was an idea the group stole from the iphone game scrabble. i told the other students you have been working on this project on the professors time and dime so he should be able to delegate and or foster how ever he seemed fit. i guess the project got scrapped because i caused all this drama with uniTuio. i could care less.... for me it was a learning experience as i was truly trying to help show the others how communicate between iphone and table.
so to my surprise today i come by xTuio and see uniTuio now has ipad integration. im so excited to take a peak. first i got to make some posts now there is a blog here at xtuio. i have been telling sander i will make some comments on xtuio for almost a year now.
so thought i would post this. normally i don't like posting unfinished things unless i need help with it but i see this is pretty relevant and now that uniTuio is some months released i can post.
the calibration is a bit off in this example as i was excited to try this on a larger surface than my 17 inch llp-lcd i have at home. i fired my little baby up the other day to find out my little box is no longer operational. i think one of my house cleaners thought my lil table was junk as i found all kinds of stuff on top of it one day.

here are some video's iphone i pad multi-touch table integrated projects. things to add is fiducial or ar tag recognition so when you place the phone on the table it is recognized. easy enough to do with reactable and tuio.
i got the unity version laying around somewhere. this is using tuio and modified bbosc xml strings for communications. i have since found tho mo networking which basically lets you send any object you want to multiple devices in two lines of code. so soon i will integrate that and or figure out multiplayer in unity for communications.
this is the first thing i built when i got an ipad. a multi-touch controller. the iphone programs like msa remote do not work right with ipad dimensions. eventually my goal is to build a unitTuio version. right now this is sending touches via bbosc. i am familiar with handling tuio objects as a client but have not yet made a tuio server. maybe someone here can help me that as it would pretty awesome to have a multi-touch tuio for the ipad. i have cocoa, open frameworks, and cucos2d versions of a multi-touch controller for the ipad. hit me up if you want a build. as of right now there isn't any tuio server for the ipad yet. could be a interesting venture ? i have no idea i like building apps that fit my needs so i have yet to deploy anything.
this is the same app a day later. it has turned into an ipad midi dj controller type of thing.
this is just cute. my daughter is only 2 years old. because multi-touch gives that touch she is able to mess around making music with the ipad as well as do other things that amaze me every day. what will the future be like if a two year old can operate a computer without even knowing how to read, write or even speak for that matter. well when my daughter takes out her pacifier she can actually speak very well in english and german. they don't know what to do with her at day care because the kids her age do not even know how to talk yet. i was more talking about children as a generality not specifically my daughter as i am sure there are other 2 year olds that have the privilege of a multi-touch device that can surf netflix etc.. i mean i could only imagine what growing up with the internet was like and how all the work we are doing now will have an impact our next generation that takes these things for granted.

very very very nice stuff Dustin! I like it very much! Can you please check the first video (the one with the cardgame) - there is something broken so that the content does not showing up... Also if you have the Unity version of this (i see that QC is running in the background), would be very interested to see that also....

fixed the card game. the movie was originally in .mp4 extension and converted to .mov so i could display on the forum. something must have gone wrong in the conversion. vimeo seems to work fine. later tonight i will see about finding the unity project and make a screen capture ( sorry im not that good at organizing my files these files where online where i know they are;)
